PORT HARCOURT—Five people reportedly died in an accident, yesterday, at Nkpolu community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It was gathered that six people were in the car, when the driver lost control and ran under a stationary coastal bus. Five of the passengers died instantly, while one other, who was fatally injured, is still in coma in the hospital.

Vanguard also learned that the incident happened in front of the driver’s father’s compound before running under a packed vehicle, owned by one of his uncles.

A source, Kinikanwo Ojingwa, narrated that one of the persons, who would have been in the vehicle, alighted from the car around a T-Junction in the area, on the grounds that it was too tight for four people to sit at the back; the incident occurred five minutes later.

Ojingwa said: “We woke up this morning to see a taxi stucked under a parked bus. The driver may have been drunk and on high speed. Five people died instantly and one of them, who is still in coma, has been taken for treatment.

“Five of them are from Nkpolu, while one is from Akwa Ibom. Three girls were involved. Two of the girls were sitting at the front seat, while one of the girls was at the back with two boys.

“It was the boy, who alighted from the car that raised the alarm of what happened before people came out. The boy was so lucky that he dropped from the car before the incident.

“He told them (the victims) that he will trek home, as they were already close to the house, rather than entering the tightly-packed car.”
