ABA—Association of South-East Town Unions, ASETU, has said that any group opposed to the restructuring of Nigeria does not mean well for Nigeria.

This came as  A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr. Mike Ahamba, yesterday, said that for the country to survive its current challenges, it needed resource control restructuring and not geographical restructuring.

The union argued that since every section of Nigeria has agreed that the country is not working, restructuring remains the most viable option to address the situation.

Chairman of the union, Chief Emeka Diwe, condemned opposition to restructuring of the country by some groups in the North, stressing that recent happenings in Nigeria have offered great opportunity to stakeholders to expedite action to come together on a non governmental platform to chart a new course,  which would lead to sustainable peace in Nigeria.

The  union insisted that only a platform, which would discuss the future of Nigeria, will end the mutual mistrust among the component units of the Nigerian federation and urged those opposed to restructuring to join the growing calls to restructure the country.

He said: “Recent events in Nigeria provide us with a great opportunity, as elders, to come together on a non governmental platform to chart a course of discourse that follows the trajectory of building sustainable peace in Nigeria.

“We enjoin all notable stakeholders to expedite action to come together to dialogue and brainstorm on options that can make for lasting peace and national cohesion, contrary to the mutual mistrust that has pervaded our nation. This will avail us the requisite forum to consider the much talked about restructuring of the country.”

Nigeria needs resource control restructuring— Ahamba

Ahamba, who spoke in an interview with Vanguard in Owerri, said the problem of Nigeria was because it has moved from a country of “production” to “distribution.”

Ahamba said: “There are several types of restructuring. One can be territorial restructuring, devolution of powers restructuring while  another one is economic restructuring and the most important is the resource control restructuring.

“The one that is causing trouble, as far as I am concerned is not the geographical restructuring or other restructuring but the resource control restructuring.

“I think Nigerians should tell themselves the truth that we are living in breach of the  constitution.

“The agreement we made before we decided to stay together as one country is being breached. I will like to recall that, when we decided to stay together as one Nigeria, we said we will live on production. When the military came in, they reversed it to distribution instead of production, we ab initio agreed upon.”
