CHIEF Learning Officer, Christfield Private Schools, Ikorodu, Mrs. Olabisi Olateru, has stressed the need for schools to train prefects on leadership role, adding that many of these prefects may eventually end up as leaders in the country.

Olateru who disclosed this during the swearing-in of nine Chrisfield College prefects for 2017/2018 academic year, stressed the importance of early leadership training for school leaders. She noted that the nine prefects will be sponsored for leadership training programmes to enhance their performance.

She said: “Later our leaders will go for leadership training programmes to enhance their performance. Resource persons will be brought in to train them and also take them out for special leadership training.” Quoting a Chinese philosopher, Confucius, she said: “If you cannot live in an upright way , how can you set a good example to others?”

She urged the head prefects and the ambassador to pledge on behalf of other prefects to wholeheartedly serve the school. According to her, the newly inaugurated prefects will be responsible for the maintenance of discipline among learners and ensure a conducive learning environment.

Meanwhile, corroborating the position of Olateru on leadership qualities, the principal/coordinator, Chrisfield College, Mr Jacob Adegbuyi Aina quoted John Quincy Adams. He said: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into the air.”

Aina told the prefects the need to be truthful, adding that there are students who trust them.  “If a man has not put his personal conduct in order, how can he put in order those under his leadership.
