Electricity Crisis: FESTAC community decries two weeks power outage

lagos—Residents of Festac town in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State have decried the two weeks’ power outage in the area, stressing that the outage was causing untold hardship on the people.

Some of the residents in the 312 Road area, yesterday, had an open confrontation with an EKEDC staff, one Falana, who came to drop the monthly bills alongside another colleague.

The areas in Festac which had been in darkness for 13 days, include 3rd Avenue, 21,311,312, 31, 201 roads.

While some areas have not had light for about three weeks, others have not had power supply in the last two weeks.

One of the residents of the community, Mrs. Etim, who runs petty business in the affected area, told Vanguard that the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC has not been up and doing in discharging of its duties.

According to her, “We have been very peaceful and we have used our resources to support the operations of EKEDC ever since it came on stream in November 2013.

“This issue of bringing bills, which are estimated, has been of serious concern to us since 2016, but despite the two weeks power outages, some EKEDC people came to drop the bills. We challenged them, because despite the power outage, we are billed between N10,000 and N17,000 a flat, which is not only crazy, but outright stealing.

“The EKEDC people have refused to give us pre-paid meters because they want to continue to extort us. My neighbour who uses pre-paid is still using a N5,000 unit she bought about four months ago, because most time, the light is not there.” But in March, I was billed N16,656 and April, N16,900. For May, I was billed N12,000, Now tell, is that not stealing, when you consider that we don’t have light most often?
