Enugu establishes revenue court to shore up IGR

ENUGU— AS a way of enhancing its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, the Enugu State government, yesterday, handed over a revenue court to the state judiciary.

Handing over the court to the Chief Jude of Enugu state, Justice Ngozi Emehelu, chairman of  the state’s Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. Emeka Odo, said the era of tax evasion was over in the state.

He lamented that federal institutions in the state owed Enugu government over N13 billion in unpaid taxes.

Odo further lamented that despite the deduction of PAYE taxes from employees of the defualting  institutions, they have failed to remit taxes so deducted.

He said: “Government is serving notice that going forward, such illegal activities will no longer be condoned. Institutions and individuals, no matter how highly placed,  who deprive government of its legitimate tax revenues will be prosecuted.”

He disclosed that through an accelerated automation of tax assessment and collection process in an integrated tax management system,  the revenue agency has been able to make an IGR of N11 billion in the past 6 months compared to N7.2 billion that was recored in same period last year.

Receiving the Revenue Court, the State Chief Judge, Justice Emehelu said that refusal to pay tax is a strict liability offence under Personal Income Tax Act Cap P. 8 laws of federation of Nigeria 2004 and the Finance Amended law 2011 laws of Enugu state Nigeria.
