The Lagos State House of Assembly, LSHA, yesterday took on the commissioner for Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, earlier summoned to discuss the issue of recent flooding across the metropolis.
Adejare appeared before the Assembly to explain all he knew about the flooding in the state.
The commissioner’s appearance followed his been summoned on Monday during plenary to give reasons for the flooding.
Addressing the lawmakers, Adejare blamed the massive flooding in some parts of the state on natural and human causes.
According to him; “Natural cause comes in form of climate change, and this affected places such as London, Suleja and other places. There was high tide at the sea that made the level of the water to rise.
“The flood affected places such as Lekki, Victoria Island and Lekki- Epe Expressway. But the water receded within 12 hours. We have been embarking on tree planting to reduce climate change in the state.
“Man-made causes resulted from people building houses on drainages. We saw people sand-filling to build houses on Osborne Phase 2. People also build houses by the lagoon against the law.
Adejare said further that there are illegal dredging all over the state but that machinery has been put in place to correct all these, adding that drainages collect water and send to the lagoon.
Reacting to Adejare’s explanation, one of the lawmakers, Mr. Bisi Yusuf representing Alimosho constituency 1, blamed the ministry for its negligence in preventing the state from experiencing flooding adding that the state government should have put machineries in motion to abate such devastating development.
