THE Lagos State Government, through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), has reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance for child abuse and child molestation.
Speaking with executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Lagos State Chapter, the Director-General, OEQA, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, said the state government has come up with a panacea to say no to rape, indecent dressing, examination malpractice, prostitution, gay, lesbianism and sexual abuse in higher institutions of learning.
She equally commended the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule, for her support and commitment to the protection of the girl-child from abuse and improving the lots of learners in private and public schools in the state through mandating school owners to make child protection policy a priority as well as educating parents against child neglect to avoid abuse.
Commending NANS for standing against indecent dressing and other vices in higher institutions, Soyombo said: “The state government, through an Executive Order by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, came up with the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme aimed at curbing indecent acts such as rape, defilement, child abuse, neglect and maltreatment of pupils while the Ministry of Education and OEQA have ensured the safety and security of children against these abuses and crimes with prescribed management systems in place to create and maintain safe environment for them.
“The inclusion of sex education in the school curriculum is another positive, but the contents of recommended texts must be thoroughly examined and approved to avoid having negative effect on the pupils.”
Saluting the enormous contributions of Governor Ambode to the education sector, President of NANS, Lagos, Comrade Moses Samson Adewale, said the governor has shown that he is responsible to residents of the state .
