DESOPADEC not dead —Itihwe

ASABA—Following recent media reports of the demise of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, the commissioner representing Ughelli South, Udu and Urhobo in Warri South in the commission,  Chief Amos Itihwe, yesterday,  insisted that the commission is not dead.

Reacting to a publication in a local tabloid credited to the spokesman of Udu Kingdom, Itihwe said that the commission was meeting its responsibilities despite the current economic  crunch in the country.

He said that the commission had embarked on a number of projects in his mandate area, disclosing that DESOPADEC under his watch as a commissioner has constructed the Ubogo-Ogbe-Udu road in the last two years.

He said that the contract for the building of a model palace for the Ovie of Udu will be awarded in the next few weeks.

On whether he scheduled a meeting with the Udu Chiefs led by the Spokesman of Udu Kingdom, Itihwe said no, adding that “I am shocked to read in the newspapers that I scheduled a meeting last week Friday for 12 noon with Udu Chiefs.”

Maintaining that the purported scheduled meeting was the handwork of mischief makers who were out to tarnish his reputation, he said “There is no way I will schedule a meeting with Chiefs and fail to attend. I respect our Chiefs because am also a Chief and a proud son of the Urhobo nation. I cannot afford to disregard or disrespect our Chiefs.”

He said that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s led administration was committed to the development of all parts of the state, particularly the oil producing communities.

Urging the people not to relent in their support for the state government in its quest to make life more meaningful for all Deltans, he said DESOPADEC will  continue to impact on the oil bearing communities.
